It does not matter if you are a celebrity, CEO, or a stay-at-home mom, your personal brand is essential to how you appear to the world. In the workplace, having a very strong personal brand can set you apart form others. Once people can identify you, understand your work ethic and connect with your personality, you will be well on your way to conquering your goals in your career. But, some of you may not be there yet. Don’t fear, you’re not alone! Here are some tips to building your personal brand that have truly helped me build mine.
- Build your online presence.
Have you ever thought about how you come across online? If I looked at your Facebook or LinkedIn right now, would your personal brand be consistent? Do you look professional? If you answered no, it’s time to start trimming! Once you have developed your brand, start getting it out there for the world to see. Also, do yourself a favor and make a website. This is a great way to monitor your brand and also add content that future employers can look at. You will tweak and trim it everyday and it will only become more valuable to you. And if you do not have any online presence, you need to get the ball rolling. Technology and social media is only going to grow, so you have a lot of catching up to do.
2. Be confident, but stay humble.
Your personal brand should be everything you are. Your brand should resemble everything you stand for, everything you’ve worked for, and everything you’ve accomplished. You are allowed to be a little “show-offy” in your personal brand. You are here to prove your worth to the world. Although your brand is supposed to build you up, do not come off as arrogant. Find that fine line between confidence and arrogance. I know this is a hard line to walk, but remember: let your brand be strong enough that it does all the talking, not you.
3. Be true to yourself.
This seems obvious, but I have to stress how important this is. Do not promote organizations or rights you don’t believe in. Do not make promises you can’t keep. And do not let other sway you. Nothing makes your personal brand go down in flames like not staying true to your brand. You are who you are, that is what makes you special and your personal brand authentic.
I hope these tips helped you in developing your personal brand. Remember, everyone is still tweaking and polishing their brand everyday, and you will for the rest of your life. I promise, this will be one of the most important skills you learn in PR.
